Crocuses needs a period of winter chilling, and will not persist long in warmer areas.
This species is considered an endangered plant in many countries worldwide. Where bulbs are planted in grass do not cut the lawn until after the leaves have died back.
Garden care: Plant bulbs in naturalistic drifts 10cm (4in) deep in July or August in gritty, well-drained soil. Dormant Crocus corms require 6-8 weeks chilling in a refrigerator before planting out in warmer areas.
Troubleshooting. Depending upon the species of Colchicum flowering can occur in spring, late summer or autumn. Colchicum autumnale, commonly known as autumn crocus, meadow saffron or naked ladies, is an autumn-blooming flowering plant that resembles the true crocuses, but is a member of the Colchicaceae plant family, unlike the true crocuses which belong to the Iridaceae family. Crocus are best treated as an annual in warmer areas. You plant it in fall, but in spring the only thing you get is foliage! The stamens of Crocus sativus flowers are the source of saffron, an expensive food coloring and spice. Colchicum is an interesting bulb.
An ideal position would be at the base of a south facing wall or in containers that could be moved into a greenhosue between April and September. Some are more difficult to grow than others but probably the easiest, Crocus speciosus should be a must for any garden providing a dreamy pool of cool violet in late September and October.
